I was recently in southern France. I ate croissants every single day. I was obsessed with croissants, particularly croissants burros. The French butter croissant is perfect in its simplicity: that crumbly, flakey, slightly crisp crust creates an immediate mess on the plate when you break into it. And then the insides – so buttery, layered with air, with a slight pull to it. There is simply nothing better.
When I got back to Miami, I ordered croissants everyplace I went. I ordered croissants at Valentine’s, a South Beach French bakery. I ordered croissants at Tru Loaf, a noted and notable bakery in Sunset Harbor. While these bakeries had many delectable treats, their croissants did not come close to the croissants in France.
And then I I went to the Thanksgiving French Market in Sunset Harbor/Miami Beach on Nov 12. And I saw the croissants from Emmy’s Artisan Bakery (https://emmysartisanbakery.com).
And then I bought the croissants.
And then I bit into it.
O.M.G. It’s the perfect French croissant. It’s embodies French croissant-ness: the multi-layered inside, with a rich buttery taste and no hint of greasiness, a crust outside that crackles just the tiniest bit when you bite into it.
The whole Market was a Frankophile’s dream. It’s the brainchild of Corinne Ouelhadj Engle, a pastry chef herself and the maker of the delightful jams and marmalades. She envisions a series of Sunday Markets just like in France. As she says:
“We started these small markets to introduce Miami to all the French artisans, creators and entrepreneurs in the area. You will not find anything made in China here. It is a delightful group of makers, most of them women. You’ll find food, accessories, decorative items, books, fashion, jewelry.”
If you live in Miami, watch out for the market. It’s back at Christmas time in Key Biscayne. And definitely worth visiting. Plus, you can practice your French, if that’s your gig.
